Samia Hübner, [1819] 1816
Phalaena cynthia Drury, 1773
= Philosamia Grote, 1874: 258 (TS. Phalaena cynthia Drury, 1773: 10, by original designation. Philosamia is a junior objective synonym of Samia)
= Desgodinsia Oberthür, 1914: 56 (TS. Desgodinsia watsoni Oberthür, 1914: 56, by monotypy. Desgodinsia Oberthür is a junior homonym of Desgodinsia Senna, 1894: 381 (Coleoptera). There is no objective replacement name, but D. watsoni is congeneric with Phalaena cynthia, the type-species of Samia Hübner and the latter is thus available for use as a subjective replacement name (Fletcher & Nye 1982).
= Archaeosamia Brechlin, 2007: 56–61.
Samia canningi Hutton, 1859 (Sat[urnia])
Masuri [Mussoorie, Himachal Pradesh, India] (Lectotype designated by Peigler & Naumann (2003))
= Philosamia cynthia var. manillensis Bouvier, 1927: 933 (TL. probably Manille [Manila, Philippines]) (misidentification)
= Samia cynthia ab. (or var.) andrewesi Debauche, 1929: 65 (TL. No type material available) (probably described as infrasubspecific; unavailable name)
Indian records from Eastern Ghats (Ganjam) and Western Ghats (Kerala) are credible, but from Bombay are doubtful (Peigler & Naumann 2003). The species is mainly found in mountains and foothills (from 150 m to 2500 m). Distributional records of S. canningi from northeastern China and Peninsular India are doubtful. Samia canningi is a wild variety of a captive species Samia ricini (Anonymous). Both names are preserved by the ICZN 2016 (Opinion 2376; Case 3638). The molecular evidences support conspecificity between S. ricini and S. canningi (Huang et al. 2021; Lu et al. 2022). However, due to the reason that the names S. ricini and S. canningi have been used for a long time for two separate species and also for the convenience in research, Liu et al. (2022) provisionally considered S. ricini and S. canningi as two different species. Samia canningi has been frequently misspelled as S. canningii.
