= Philostola Billberg, 1820: 87 (TS: Phalaena turca Linnaeus, 1761: 322). Philostola is a junior objective synonym of Mythimna Ochsenheimer, 1816.
= Aletia Hübner, [1821] 1816: 239 (TS: Noctua vitellina Hübner, [1808]: pl. 81)
= Heliophila Hübner, 1822: 20, 32 (TS: Phalaena pallens Linnaeus, 1758: 510). A junior homonym of Heliophila King, 1807: 227 (Hymenoptera). There is no objective replacement name, but P. pallens is congeneric with N. vitellina Hübner, the type species of Aletia Hübner, [1821], which should therefore be used as the subjective replacement name.
= Leucania Boisduval, 1829: 82. A junior homonym of Leucania Ochsenheimer, 1816 (Lepidoptera; Noctuidae). There is no objective replacement name, but P. pallens is congeneric with N. vitellina Hübner, the type species of Aletia Hübner, [1821], which should therefore be used as the subjective replacement name.

Worldwide three subspecies, <i>M. p. pallidicosta</i> distributed in higer latitudes and altitudes in the Himalayas, <i>M. p. brevipennis</i> (Warren, 1913) recorded from Sri Lanka, and <i>M. p. saturata</i> (Warren, 1913) known from Malay Peninsula.
