Based on the morphological characteristics and DNA barcode analysis, the Indian Marumba dyras is split into two distinct subspecies: Marumba dyras dyrus (confined to Sri Lanka and south India) and Marumba dyras oriens (distributed through northern and north-east India to South East Asia) (Haxaire & Melichar 2023). Populations from central India require further investigation.
